who are we
MARIO ZAĶA
known to all as Zazą, was born on Lipari but arrived with the wind over 25 years ago on Stromboli. Impeccably Eolian, he is known by everyone (and that means everyone) - if he didn't exist one would have to invent him. He is the classical guide of Stromboli.
LORENZO RUSSO
Lorenzo Russo born in the city but an islander by choice, he has been a regular visitor to the island since early childhood and has studied all the island's natural aspects.
He has a degree in biology and admits to being deeply fascinated by the volcano.
MARIO PRUITI
Mario Pruiti was born in the Sicilian Nebrodi mountains, lives on Ginostra and knows its every secret. His favorite subject matter being the social sciences with a degree in Political Science, he most enjoys showing excursionists the island's anthropological aspects.
Magmatrek' guides belong to the "Collegio regionale Guide Vulcanologiche Sicilia"
environmental responsibility
Magmatrek arises from a group of Volcanological Guides who have lived and operated in Stromboli and Ginostra for several years and share a mutual passion for the island and its volcano.
Our main objective is to promote the archipelago and Sicily's natural and cultural heritage. The excursions offered provide the perfect opportunity for a deeper understanding of the natural earth sciences, and anthropological and historical aspects of the archipelago.
Our years of experience in this field enable us to offer a range of information regarding the flora, fauna and geological formations of the island. Our practical experience and formal training allow us to offer excursions in secure conditions.

what you will do
Following the volcanos intense activity starting in 2002, with the seaquake and violent eruption of 2003, access was closed for two years, and reopened in March 2005, with new regulations and reorganization of the trail network, implemented by the Department of Civil Defence and the Sicilian Regional Authoritys State Forestry Office. There is free access to trails under 400 metres asl. Above this, visitors must be accompanied by licensed mountain or volcano guides. Access to the volcano is along a newly-designed path created in December 2004, which is safer and more practical than previously used paths.
New regulations (for information: www.protezionecivile.it - COA - Civil Defence Advanced Operations Centre, tel. 090/986183) allow a limited number of participants: no more than 80 persons can visit the crater of the volcano at any one time. Before setting off, the guide provides the Advanced Operations Centre and Stromboli Carabinieri Station with a list of names of the persons accompanied, the route, the time of departure and estimated time of return.

Stromboli is a strato volcano which rises from the seabed to a height of 2400 meters, 924 of which are above sea level. The island covers 12.5 sq km and is 25 times smaller than the volcano's base area under sea level. Stromboli is a part of the Eolian Islands, all of which are volcanic in origin, and have been included on UNESCO's World Heritage List for their priceless geological value.
Stromboli is one of the world's most visited volcanoes due to its relative accessibility on foot, and its constant form of activity over the last 3000 years.
Despite its active volcanic nature and its harsh and rocky mountainside, the island is host to a rich and endemic vegetation, such as the Cytisus aeolicus and the Centaurea aeolica. It is also host to different bird species which nest here and it is not uncommon to see a Raven, an Hoopoe or a Peregrine. In spring Stromboli is a heaven for various species of migratory birds as it is situated on their migratory passage route; with a binocular it is perfect for birdwatching.
