*what you will do

You are offered the opportunity for participation in the collection and analysis of data on the distribution, the ecology, the behaviour and the acoustic of cetaceans. Great attention is given to the relic population unit of endangered short-beaked common dolphins, but several other species of cetaceans also live in the research area.

Protection of the cetacean fauna in this area is needed from at least some obvious threats such as harassment by recreational vessels and uncontrolled fishing. However, no specific measures have been still adopted that would directly benefit cetaceans' conservation in any part of the area.

Join us and learn about the whales and dolphins commonly seen in the area and how to identify them, assist in the field in counting the animals, recording their behaviour, determining geographical positions and taking photographs from our sailing boat. Hopefully you work will contribute to conservation measures for these threatened wildlife.

SPECIES
The study area is well known for its high bio-diversity: it is feeding site for fin whales, feeding and breeding ground for striped and Risso's dolphins, and transient zone for social groups of sperm whales.
Also you might occasionally see common bottlenose dolphin, and long finned pilot whale.

HABITAT
The special circumstances near the submarine canyon - sedimentation and hydrodynamics - have created a special habitat characterised by a great local density and diversity of Mediterranean marine fauna exceeding that of other habitats along the continental shelf and slope.
Our study area is a small zone especially rich with different species of cetaceans and other marine life forms as mantas, swordfishes and tunas.

* day by day itinerary

Weather permitting; we leave every day to sail. Your duties onboard are helping researchers studying dolphins. In the beginning researchers will train you to perform specific tasks: watching, underwater camera monitoring, behavioural data collecting, photo-identification, steering, acoustic recording etc.
Navigation data are collected in order to estimate dolphins relative sighting frequencies. The presence of sea turtles, tuna, swordfish, fish schools, mantas, moonfish and marine birds, is also recorded.
During daylight there is usually free time for a swim, or for the skipper to give theoretical and practical sailing lectures.
In case of bad weather you can help ordering the collected data, entering them into the computer and in preliminary analysis. Extra lectures and video sessions will be offered by the team.

*other activities

Learning sail and working together with reserach staff.

*accommodations

Accommodation is in a 17.7 metre long historical wooden cutter. The space inside is divided into a kitchen with a table and large windows, a sleeping room for six people (accommodation in berths), toilets, a small changing room, a room and a bathroom reserved to the crew and on the bow the "sailor cabin" with two/three (with a child) places.
In the dormitory people of both sexes may be staying. Additionally are available an outside sun-powered shower and an additional shower at the local port (hot water - free).
Life onboard is simple, communal and eco-compatible lifestyle, conserving energy and resources.

how we make the difference

social responsability
Ecovolunteer, green volunteer, conservation volunteer, by whatever name you may name us: we go for holidays with a mission. Ecovolunteers are a financial and working grant for wildlife projects in research, conservation and animal rescue. Part of the work, sometimes most of the work that you will do is only possible due to your financial and physical contribution. Ecovolunteer is inspired by the Fair Trade principles in other sectors of economy; ecovolunteer therefore follows its own principles for Fair Travel. The essence of Fair Travel is that participants pay a fair price for services provided and that as much as possible of this payment will be provided to local organizations. That is why Ecovolunteer prefers to work directly through local conservation organizations.

environmental responsibility
Is it not primarily a responsibility for society, for the authorities and for the companies that exploit wildlife to fund research, conservation and protection and to see to it that it is effectively operated? In stead of paying to be an ecovolunteer, should I not be paid?
Fact of life is that for most authorities, companies and institutions wildlife conservation and animal welfare are not high on the agenda and therefore get little budget. Usually, people regard wildlife as a public good that may be drawn upon for free by authorities, companies and tourists whenever they want. Alas, this is true in most countries, regardless of the political system or the financial state.
However, we prefer to think wildlife belongs to no one and to everyone. Therefore wildlife research projects, wildlife conservation projects and animal welfare projects fight an ever-increasing pressure of societal development. Scientists and conservationists experience a growing workload. They are always in need of support, both financially and manually. That is why you need to be a paying ecovolunteer, because you want to make a difference!

economical responsability
You will find the project staff open and friendly, and you will have a first hand experience of living and working on a field research station or a wildlife conservation project, taking part in the daily routines. You will get an inside view of the pleasures. But unlike tourists who normally ‘consume’ the results of conservation, you, as an Ecovolunteer, will also see and feel for yourself the enormous work, the frustrations, the difficulties and problems involved in conservation.

hospitality
Through the cooperation with local organizations, usually local guides and locally owned and run services are offered.
Project staff members, directly accessible for you, generally provide you with expert knowledge of their area and their field of experience. Group sizes are kept to a maximum level as considered appropriate by the local conservation organization, to minimize the possibility of negative impacts. Groups of ecovolunteers therefore may be very small, in some projects the maximum number is only two, three or four!
This will allow you to get closer to the researchers / conservationists, the wildlife and the places you are visiting. It also allows local project organizations to apply with small scale projects that are in need of support.
